Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee has been transforming the lives of children since 1970. We are a member agency of the oldest and largest youth mentoring organization in the United States, consisting of more than 350 agencies nationwide.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is committed to enhancing our role in being a part of a collaborative system of support that leads to positive outcomes for East Tennessee’s youth. We partner with families, donors, volunteers, schools, government, and other organizations to provide children facing adversity with the tools they need to not only succeed, but thrive. Research demonstrates that Big Brothers Big Sisters evidenced based programs helps children stay in school and out of trouble.
To ensure we are able to effectively and efficiently address children’s needs long into the future, we are focusing on building and strengthening our relationships with key educational and juvenile justice partners. Together we will create stronger families, better schools, and safer communities.
We know that the longer a child is matched with a caring mentor in our program, the greater the impact on that child’s life. Big Brothers Big Sisters one-to-one mentoring has long been linked through empirical research to educational outcomes for children.
An independent research study conducted by Public/Private Ventures in the 1990s found that Big Brothers Big Sisters mentored youth skipped half as many days of school as control group youth, felt more competent in their schoolwork, skipped fewer classes, and showed gains in grade point average. Additionally, in 1995, Public/Private Ventures cited that a child matched with a Big Brother or Big Sister for a minimum of 6 months was likely to improve in 18 life skill areas including the following:
• 46% of children matched with a Big Brother or Sister were less likely to start using illegal drugs
• 27% of children matched with a Big Brother or Sister were less likely to start using alcohol
• 52% of children matched with a Big Brother or Sister were less likely to skip a day of school
• 33% of children matched with a Big Brother or Sister are less likely to engage in violent behavior
