To build confidence in children and teens, and show them that they CAN succeed.
I use the Barton Reading and Spelling System. This is an Orton-Gillingham approach, and while it was specifically designed (and proven to work) for those with Dyslexia it can be used by anybody. I have experience tutoring a range of ages from young children to teenagers. Currently, I am working on my certification through Barton and hope to achieve it within 1-2 years. While I am working on obtaining certification I am offering a discounted hourly rate of $15. The Barton system has 10 levels. By the time students complete level 10 they will be a a mid ninth grade reading level. Barton teaches reading and spelling together, and throughout will also add in grammar and writing.
All students, regardless of age, must start at level one. This is crucial! Sometimes the foundations of reading and spelling are lacking which can lead to difficulties later on. I will go through the preliminary levels as quickly as I can to get your child to the level where they are needing help.
Children and teens that have learning disabilities often hit hurdle after hurdle, and have failed many times. That is why the methods used for error correction are extremely important. I encourage you to always ask a tutor for examples of different ways they correct a student's mistakes. I always try to -
1. Point out what the student has done correctly prior to discussing any errors.
2. When possible, take the blame for the error myself.
3. Never end a session while a student is struggling. My mission is to build confidence! Therefore, during challenging lessons we will go back to an easier section to end the lesson or pull out a game that reinforces the concepts we are learning.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
We've spoken together, discussed your individual needs/concerns/goals and we've decided to move forward with tutoring. What's next?
The next step would be to schedule a quick student screening which would determine whether or not that student is ready to begin the Barton System. You can expect this entire meeting to take approximately 30-45 minutes. The screening itself takes 10-15 minutes, and then the rest of the meeting is spent going over and discussing the tutoring contract.
After your student has passed the initial screening we can immediately begin tutoring. In order to make progress I require students to meet with me two times per week for one hour. In the case that a student is really struggling, we may need to meet more times per week. Most students will only need to see me 2 hours per week.
The first two levels are the shortest and students will progress through them more quickly. Starting at level 3 the progress begins to slow down. On average, students will spend 3-5 months on levels 3-10.
WHERE I MEET:
I am currently meeting students at public locations in the Karns and Bearden areas. After agreeing to move forward with tutoring I will send you a list of locations. Also, I am willing to drive up to 15 minutes from my home (within 3 miles of Karns Branch Library) to meet students, and I am always open to suggestions of other places to meet.
Not everyone learns the same way. As a society we've known that for a long time. We use an approach proven to be effective for those with dyslexia.
